Amalia Kouvalis is a visual artist working primarily in oil painting, printmaking, and drawing. Her practice explores the surreal and the psychological through a unique blend of portraiture, lighting, and color. Deeply inspired by Victorian aesthetics, time travel, and themes of melancholy, Kouvalis creates imagery that feels both timeless and dreamlike—inviting viewers into alternate realities steeped in emotion and atmosphere.

Kouvalis’s body of work spans etchings, screenprints, and intricate works on paper, often merging traditional techniques with contemporary narrative sensibilities. Her use of color and shadow evokes a cinematic tension, placing the human figure in states of quiet reflection or eerie stillness.

Since 2015, she has exhibited throughout Chicago in a variety of galleries and independent spaces. She was a printmaking artist-in-residence at Lillstreet Art Center and has been featured in several national art publications and blogs.

Kouvalis continues to develop her practice through a lens of introspection and wonder, crafting visual worlds that blur the boundaries between history, memory, and imagination.
